An external hemorrhoid simply means that it occurs outside the body. Even internal hemorrhoids can extend outside the body, but external hemorrhoids actually originate outside the body, next to the anus.
A thrombosed external hemorrhoid, on the other hand, is what you get when a blood clot forms. Basically a vein bursts, and then a hard lump or swelling will occur in that area. It can be very painful. And in my case, it came with a lot of bleeding.
I knew I had occasional problems with hemorrhoids, but it was never a big deal. A hemorrhoid would appear, and maybe it would bleed a little, but then it would go away. I didn't really have to do anything other than try to avoid straining, and it was just gone soon enough.
But one day it was different. Right after my dance class I felt some itching and noticed significantly more bleeding than I had experienced before. At first I was scared because I was afraid that something was seriously wrong with me.
I actually didn't go to the doctor right away because I was in shock. What was going on? I just tried to move as little as possible and hope that things would calm down, and the bleeding would subside and hopefully disappear forever.
